Dear Mike Lowell,

Well Mikey, farewell my friend. I woke up this morning to read that the Red Sox are almost certainly shipping you off to Texas for a young catcher named Max Ramirez. While Mr. Ramirez may one day grow to become a fine ball player, he will be hard pressed to fill your shoes. I know we as fans are not supposed to grow attached to players in team sports, you know, just “cheer for the laundry”, but that’s difficult to pull off when an athlete comes along such as yourself.

Now many, myself included, probably made jokes about how slowly you moved at the end of ‘08 & almost all of ‘09, but that certainly did not take away from the joy you brought Red Sox Nation in amost every game you wore the uniform. You accomplished a lot for Boston while there. You were a World Series MVP. You were a unifying force in the locker room for Latino & English speaking players alike. Most of all, as a cancer survivor, you gave thousands upon thousands of fans hope in their own battle against the disease. A modern day athlete who was in fact a role model.

Good luck in Texas & beyond*

So I was involved in my first car accident today. I’m fine. I went to go get a gallon of milk after work, and on my way home the wind blew a garbage can into the road. I couldn’t swerve to avoid it as cars were coming in the other direction, and I had to stop abruptly. Avoided hitting the can, but my Honda Civic got nailed by a large pick up truck that of course had tow ropes in the front. Needless to say my rear end is all kindsafucked.

In the end there were no injuries, just another hassle this month that I’m not really psyched to have to deal with. Oh well.

Should TCU, ranked fourth in the final BCS standings, have played fellow unbeaten Cincinnati or Florida, which spent 12 weeks ranked No. 1, and won handily, it could have made a case for a share of the national title in the AP poll, which isn’t contractually obligated to crown the winner of the BCS Championship Game. But instead, we have a rematch of the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl, only with a much more lucrative payday — and just like last year’s Poinsettia Bowl, it offers no tangible reward, because no matter what Boise State and TCU do in that game, it will be met with, “Yes, you went undefeated and won a BCS game, but look who you played.”

I’m reminded of the opening scene of Animal House, when Kent Dorfman and Larry Kroger knocked on the door of Omega Theta Pi during rush. After being quickly paraded around and given a glimpse of all the beautiful people, they’re summarily banished to sit on the couch with Mohammet, Jugdish, Sidney and Clayton, a motley crew deemed more on their level.

By welcoming two non-AQ teams and putting them on that proverbial couch, the BCS appears to be playing damage control and trying to avoid a trial in the court of public opinion and, whether it’s the real reason or not, further pressure from congress.

It’s tough to tell sometimes. Maybe it was divine intervention. Maybe it was just luck. But I do know that after what was a very tough week for my family, watching Domenik Hixon return a punt 79 yards to pay dirt was exactly what we needed.

It sounds silly on so many levels I’m sure, but after an incredibly shitty week my family was in need of something good. And grabbing onto my father and sister as Hixon returned that ball to the endzone, in our last time at Giants Stadium, that was as cathartic and healing a moment as I have ever experienced, and I know that I will never forget it. It’s a power that sports has always had in my family; it has a unique ability to bring us together and to restore our faith in the universe, if only for a little while…

Once all the ping-pong balls were drawn in Cape Town, the U.S. ended up with the following first-round games: vs. England on June 12 in Rustenburg, vs. Slovenia on June 18 in Johannesburg and vs. Algeria on June 23 in Pretoria.

The vast majority of pundits around the world will pick the U.S. to advance to the knockout round along with England, and with good reason. Slovenia and Algeria were two of the biggest surprises in November even to qualify for the World Cup, both countries needing upsets in playoffs against Russia (by Slovenia) and Egypt (by Algeria) to reach the field of 32. Algeria and Slovenia are arguably the worst teams from Africa and Europe, respectively, to qualify for South Africa.

And while England will be a huge challenge in the U.S.’ opening game, it’s a mouthwatering matchup between old rivals who last met in the World Cup in 1950: a 1-0 U.S. victory that is considered perhaps the greatest upset in World Cup history. Can anyone say Landon Donovan vs. David Beckham in South Africa? If you’re the U.S., having your toughest group game first is a good thing. (Remember the big win over Portugal in the 2002 World Cup opener?) What’s more, England is a traditionally slow-starting team in World Cups.

July 1998- December 4, 2009

After 11 years as a member of my family, we had to put my buddy Bro to sleep today. We adopted him and his sister Sissy, (yes I know, original) back in 1998 when I was 13 years old. They were the first real pets I had ever had. While Sissy has always been reserved, Bro was always the life of the party. He was affectionate towards strangers, and was always ready for attention. He loved nothing more than rolling around, chasing shadows, and lying in the sun on window sills.

About a week ago he stopped eating. Turns out he was going into kidney failure. When we brought him in today to put him down, they said that his liver had also stopped functioning. There was no way he would survive the weekend, and there was nothing we could have done to prevent his situation or prolong his life. It was his time, and he wasn’t in any pain when he left us.

So here’s to you Broster, my first real pet, my buddy, the guy who always cheered me up. I love you, and I hope that wherever you are is warm and soft and there’s someone there to rub your belly. I’m gonna miss you a lot.
